MSR Zoic 2 Review

MSR’s new lightweight Zoic 2-person tent offers some extra space without compromising in weight or head room. The classic x pattern poles have been updated with a center hub. Staying true to the MSR brand, the Zoic is well built and ready for an adventure right out of the box, but some modifications and design updates could take the Zoic to the next level.

The Zoic 2 is a great tent even without changes. It could be tuned just how you like it; everyone sets up their tents differently. Personally, I got rid of the center hub. I felt it made the poles harder to manage. Next, the guylines come a bit shorter than I would like. At about 6 feet, they work great when on good soil for steaking. Another 4 feet makes a big difference when you need to tie off to a tree, rock or that weird metal rod sticking out of the beach. Similarly, the aluminum tensioners are great with steaks, but limits your options. Another easy change is to the tent bag. It fits a making rolled tent very well, but there is little room for any extra air. A bag more similar to the Hubba series tents would be a treat.

The changes I would like to see from MSR are minimal, but may offer nice touches. The side pockets in the tent could be deeper. I like when the things in my pants pockets fit into a tent pocket neatly. Next the floor could be a bit taller. It might cut down on the ventilation, but it would also bloc some dust. The lack of ventilation sounds like a problem, but the tent is already a condensation factory if it is fully zipped. On the bright side you could collect drinking water…

With two people, this tent is comfortable; which can’t be said about all 2-person tents. For one person, this tent is down right luxurious. Aluminum grommets and sturdy guyline tabs ensure the tent will last. Finally, the option to open half or the rainfly on warm, clear nights is great. I would highly recommend the Zoic 2 for those 2 person backcountry trips where weight is a factor, but comfort is still important. If you are looking for a reliable luxury tent to take on a sea kayak trip for one, this tent is also for you.
